John Carey

John Carey is the young dancer that has in the past only been referred to as "Michael Flatley's Understudy". John did begin in the Lord of the Dance as Michael's understudy, but has become so much more than that. A member of Troupe 2, John danced the role of the Lord of the Dance. His golden locks and his ability to leap to incredible heights has earned him tremedous attention.

The short (and outdated) bio in the old show program said: "John, 20, started dancing at the age of 7 and went on to win his first major championship - The Great Britain Championship at 8 years. Subsequently, in 1998 he won all of the five major championships - All Ireland, World, American, British, National and Great Britain, since then he went on to win 6 World, 6 All Ireland, 7 British National, 6 Great Britain and 4 Amercian titles. He gained a place at Oxford University to read chemistry, before joining the original Lord of the Dance Troupe. As Michael Flatley picked him out to be the lead dancer in the second troupe, it may be a while before he will go on to Oxford to resume his studies."

As for the biographical information that I have been able to find, John was born on February 26, 1978 and lives in Sutton Coldfield, England.

Well, it finally happened. I got to meet John at the show in Toledo on March 22, 1999. He did not dance as the lord that night but was kind enough to stop and talk to some of us VBers. Hes is so very sweet and has such a lovely voice. It was great meeting him, especially when Karyn made me ask Cian where John was. (I did it rather loudly so he probably heard me all the way on the bus!

This page dedicated to John is dependent on the contributions from Lord of the Dance fans and I thank each and every one of them. Check back soon to see what has been added.

Besides photos of John, I would like to get together a page of everyone's personal experiences with John. So send them in to me as soon as you can.
